Type 685

The type 685 is a very large heavy casement designed to protect dismounted naval guns. Due to the failures of the German surface fleet, surface naval production was suspended in the late war period and the large guns produced for the scrapped battleships and cruisers were re-appropriated for shore defense. The type 685 was designed to mount and protect these large naval guns and oriented to attack any landing fleet steaming within range. These guns were so large, the gun would be emplaced before the bunker was fully formed and cast.

Smaller bunkers of similar design for protecting heavy artillery pieces were situated along pont-du-hoc and were the objective of the US Ranger assault in the Normandy landings. The design is very simple, featuring only a very large gun room with two adjoining magazines.
